ROM is a non-surgical approach to treating joint pain and instability by using injections targeted to repair damaged tendons and ligaments. It requires in-depth knowledge of anatomy and training in the use of proper solutions and ultrasound-guided needle placement.
ROM is also known as prolotherapy (proliferative therapy). It is sometimes referred to as “stem cell therapy” or “PRP therapy” when those particular solutions are used.
ROM involves the injection of special solutions into weakened, stretched, or damaged ligaments or tendons. These solutions release growth factors and induce an inflammatory reaction, which mimics the normal repair and healing reaction of the body.
Dr. Lynch uses autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and dextrose solutions depending on the condition treated.
Although stem cell therapy is a form of ROM, Dr. Lynch does not use stem cells in his treatments. If you are interested in stem cell therapy we will be happy to refer you to another provider.
PRP is obtained by drawing a small amount of the patients blood and using a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma.
The plasma concentrated with platelets and growth factors are then injected as a solution in the affected area in order to induce a healing response.
ROM is proven useful for treating a variety of injuries and conditions, including but not limited to:
• Ankle sprains
• Back and neck pain
• arthritis
• carpal tunnel syndrome
• foot pain
• knee pain
• hip pain
• plantar fascitis
• shoulder pain
• rotator cuff tears
• sports injuries
• tennis elbow
• tendonitis
• wrist pain
• whiplash injuries
• sacroiliac joint pain
Treatments involve several injections into the affected area. Ultrasound guidance is used depending on the structure needed to treat. Treatments are repeated every 3-8 weeks until function is returned and pain is resolved. Results are generally noticeable in two to four treatments depending on the patient’s diagnosis and individual healing capacity.
Every person is unique, and so is their pain. A thorough evaluation is necessary before treatment to determine if a person is an appropriate candidate.
